Advocacy & Accountability

Student Advocacy and Accountability seeks to support our students by providing clear expectations of behavior, positively reinforcing that behavior, and supporting students as they discover and define themselves. As students grow as a person, they will likely make decision resulting in negative actions. Advocacy recognizes these decisions are a natural part of the developmental process; accountability recognizes that each person is responsible for his/her actions.
Student Advocacy
Student advocacy responds with an understanding that college students are in a time of transition developmentally, professionally, and personally. In college, students will face internal and external conflicts which challenge their sense of self. In student advocacy, we seek to support students as they move through these conflicts and help them learn self-advocacy skills. This support comes from our daily interaction with students and programming, both active and passive.
Accountability comes in many forms, including: expectations setting and positive reinforcement of expected behavior; restorative justice; educational meetings; peer-to-peer interaction; and, the College’s student conduct process (Student Handbook). Every experience is a learning opportunity. Through reflection on their decisions, a student may learn from that experience and apply what they learned to future experiences. Being held accountable can positively affect a student’s developmental process since it encourages self-awareness. If a student’s actions require intervention by the College, the focus will be on accepting responsibility for the actions, learning from the experience, and applying what is learned to future decisions.
