Informational interviewing involves talking to professionals in an area of career interest and asking questions related to various aspects of their job. Throughout the school year, students will have the opportunity to learn more about a particular profession, industry/company/agency or about the skills needed to be successful. Informational interviewing opportunities will be available on campus as well as in settings off campus.

The job shadowing experience is designed to give students the opportunity to observe professionals in a career field of their interest. Job shadowing allows students to investigate career fields, outline their career goals and build their professional network.

What does job shadowing involve?
All job shadowing experiences will be different depending on the sponsor and the work environment. You may participate in a number of different activities such as:

10 Steps to a Job Shadowing Opportunity

  1. Contact Great Futures Coach about your interest in job shadowing and set up an appointment.

  2. Meet with the Great Futures Coach to discuss career interests and eligibility requirements for the program.

  3. Complete Job Shadowing Application Form and Release of Liability form.

  4. Meet with the Great Futures Coach to discuss possible job shadowing sponsors, student and sponsor expectations, release of liability form, sponsor guidelines, job shadowing hours, evaluation forms, work etiquette, confidentiality, follow-up, etc.

  5. Develop talking points to discuss with job shadowing sponsor at initial meeting.

  6. Meet with job shadowing sponsor and the Great Futures Coach at work site to review details of job shadowing experience.

  7. Set up job shadowing schedule with sponsor and share contact information.

  8. Develop a list of questions to ask sponsor regarding their career, work responsibilities, professional advice, professional organizations, occupational trends, education/training, etc.

  9. Complete job shadowing experience.

  10. Complete Job Shadowing Opportunity Evaluation form and return to Great Futures Coach.
