In Appreciation: Wayne Benton, Louisburg College History Professor, Basketball Coach

Wayne Dixon Benton, a longtime history professor, athletic director and coach at Louisburg College, died Sunday.

Benton, 90, a U.S. Army veteran, also coached Louisburg College basketball, leading the 1960 team to the Final Eight of the NJCAA tournament. Before arriving at Louisburg, Benton coached basketball at Newport and Swansboro high schools, and his 1953 Newport team won the Boys 1A State Championship.

Benton, a graduate of Atlantic Christian College, earned a master's degree in history from East Carolina University and taught history and social studies for 40 years until his retirement. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Helen S. Benton, and his brother, Lowell Benton. A graveside service will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Louisburg at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Mike Safley officiating.

The family requests that instead of flowers, memorials may be made to Louisburg College, 501 N. Main St., Louisburg, NC 27549.
