Currently Timothy Massey is an Associate Professor of Art at SUNY-Brockport in Brockport, New York. He received his collegiate studies in printmaking and drawing at the University of Tennessee and at Ohio State University. This series of illustrations started ten years ago when Massey began doing small black and white mixed media studies, primarily of his dogs. Working in this format allowed him to contemplate deviations in composition and media before committing to a specific path. Historically, the word "preliminary" has implied something coming before -- or preparing for -- a main action or event. He has a different take on this concept. Layers of pattern and narrative engage the viewer, drawing them into these small vignettes.

"I continued perusing these smaller works not as a guide for a specific project, but instead as a series of random images, sometimes arriving at a conceptual intent spontaneously. This experimental approach let me explore media interactions and a balance of repeated motifs. This series has now grown to over 100 compositions."
