News and Events:
Louisburg offers a complete college experience. We understand that there's more to college
life than attending classes. Although we are a small college, we offer many of the programs,
sports, and activities available at large four-year universities and colleges. However, at
Louisburg you will not have to stand in line behind juniors and seniors in the classroom, on
the playing field, or in leadership positions. You can immediately act in a play, sing in a
musical group, serve as editor for the college news magazine, plan social activities, compete
on the playing field, or set policy as a student government member.
Come to this page often and check out what's happening on campus. See you at the next
event!

STORIED SUCCESS
By Amy Scoggin McManus
Director of Marketing and Communications
(from the Franklin Times February 20, 2010 issue)
I tell stories - weekly, in the College newsletter; monthly, in this column; and yearly, in the annual alumni magazine. I write about our students, past and present. It's the part of my job about which I am most passionate. It makes things like keeping up with budgets and wrestling with copy machines bearable.
Every day, I have the opportunity to interact with people who can remember the days of the Great Depression, along with Baby Boomers and those who make up Generations X, Y, and Next. I personally connect with our current students throughout the halls of Main, in the cafeteria at lunchtime, and along the well-worn, brick-paved paths of campus. With our alumni, I have more virtual interactions through email. Many of them I've never met in person, but feel as though I know them.
Luckily, I've had the opportunity to meet some of them in person and get to know their stories. For the past few months, I've been collecting information, gathering pictures, and writing their profiles to include in the College's 2010 alumni magazine. These stories not only stand as tangible proof that the College has successfully carried out its mission for these graduates, but also reminds us - faculty, staff, and alumni - of the importance of that mission in preparing the next generation of students to realize their full potential. The stories also serve as a testimony to our current students, showing them what is possible for their own futures.
This past spring, one of the members of the Learning Partners staff sent me an email regarding an alumnus by the name of Daniel Thomas (pictured below with President Obama). Thomas, she told me, was a 2006 Louisburg graduate who was now working as the head catering chef for the United States Senate. During the time he attended Louisburg, he was enrolled in the Learning Partners Program - a unique fee-based program offered by the College to address the individual learning needs of students with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
I was intrigued by his story and eager to learn more about how such a young person, just a few years out of school, could land that type of high-level position. I contacted him through email and we began a correspondence. He told me about his experiences at Louisburg, how he had gone on to attend the Culinary Institute of America in New York, how he had been a fireman while in New York, and how he eventually started working at the Capitol. Just before the beginning of the 2009 fall semester, Thomas was chosen to deliver the keynote address to the incoming freshman class at their induction ceremony in August.
After knowing him only on a virtual level, I would now have the opportunity to meet him face to face. I arrived at the airport the Saturday before the ceremony with my two kids in tow, scanning the baggage terminal for Thomas. When we recognized each other, he gave me a firm handshake and introduced himself. I was rather impressed with his attire: he wore a crisp buttoned-down shirt under a well-tailored suit. On an airplane. On a Saturday. Not your typical twenty-something, to be sure. As we talked during the car ride on the way to his hotel, my kids interrupted with questions. I had told them before we left for the airport that Thomas had catered the brunch for President Obama's Inauguration and that he got to meet the president in person. This was their first brush with fame and they were a bit giddy.
We talked about life in D.C., the politicians and famous people he'd had the opportunity to meet (my kids were most impressed when he said he'd met the Jonas brothers), and what it was like to work in that environment. I learned more about Thomas the next day when he addressed the freshman class. With sincerity and humor, he spoke on the topic of "What Louisburg College Means to Me." For him, Louisburg was the springboard; the place where he received a strong foundation for future success. Hearing the passion in his voice, I realized Thomas was living his dream. His work was his bliss. Even with the inevitable hassles and long hours, Thomas made a living doing what he loved. I know just how he feels.
