Louisburg College Family,
Our nation has experienced several events in the past few months that impact all of us and remind us of the need for inclusion and understanding. We recognize and are saddened by the loss of life in recent incidents in Orlando, Florida; Falcon Heights, Minnesota; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and Dallas, Texas. Although these events are not directly related, they share a common bond in illuminating the challenging realities faced every day by individuals in our society. We also recognize and embrace the diversity in our campus community, and want to affirm our commitment to a safe and open environment for members of our community who share an identity with the victims of these events. Although you may not share an identity with the victims of these events, you may also be impacted.
At times like this, we are reminded of the College’s core values of community, respect, and faith. We embrace the idea that we all have commonalities which bind us together, leading to self-awareness and a genuine concern and responsibility for the welfare of others. We embrace the dignity of all members of our community with the expectation that all members of our community do likewise. We hold in high regard our relationship to The United Methodist Church. We hold that all persons are created in the image of God and we encourage spiritual exploration by all members of our community, convicted that a foundation of faith enhances learning and personal growth. We firmly believe that love is more powerful than violence and hatred, and is an undying force in the active pursuit of peace.
We recognize that many of you, like us, are experiencing strong emotions about these recent events. We encourage you to seek assistance as needed in coping with these emotions. Students seeking assistance may reach out to the Student Life Administrator on Call or Director of Housing & Residence Life at 919.205.8436, or the Community Director on Call at email@example.com. Faculty and staff seeking assistance may utilize the Employee Assistance Program at 1.800.633.3353.
The College will host an open conversation about these recent events on Wednesday, July 13th from 5:00-6:00pm in the Multi-Purpose Room (MPR) at the Jordan Student Center. Sharing our thoughts and emotions, as well as listening to those of others, is a starting point. This first step in the healing process will allow for members of our community to come and be heard in a non-judgmental environment. It is our desire that this time of sharing will lead to an increased awareness of and respect for self and others, and serve as the impetus for personal and corporate action to bring about change.
As members of the Louisburg College family let us rededicate ourselves to the pursuit of peace by loving, respecting, supporting, and caring for one another.
