Sheilah Cotten Honored by NCHSAA

Sheilah Cotten

Former Louisburg College coach and current professor of sociology Sheilah Cotten was honored by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association earlier this year as one of 100 female "atheletes to remember," in a celebration commemorating the association's 100th anniversary.

Cotten, who also serves her Louisburg College peers as the chair of the faculty senate, is a 1971 grad of Fuquay-Varina High School, where she excelled on the basketball and softball teams. A 1975 graduate of East Carolina University, Cotten was the first woman to be inducted into their Athletic Hall of Fame, receiving that honor in 1981 for her record-setting contributions as a basketball player.

She was also inducted into Louisburg College's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007, for her nearly three decades of coaching in volleyball, men's tennis, women's basketball, and softball; Cotten Softball Field is named in her honor. Her contributions as a softball coach were later recognized on a national scale when she was inducted into the NJCAA's Softball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
