Louisburg College has recognized 128 students as scholar-athletes, awarding a record number with medals for exemplary work in the classroom in spring and fall 2016.

During Wednesday’s ceremony, the 10th year of honoring Hurricane scholar-athletes, guest speaker and Professor Emeritus Sheilah Cotten urged students to help their teammates discover the joys of learning. “In every single season there will be a defining moment when everything you’ve worked for comes down to one play,” said the former coach. That moment requires good judgment and critical thinking, skills learned in the classroom. “Without those skills,” Cotton said, “you will never be a champion...Make education and learning a lifetime passion."

Cotten, along with President Mark La Branche, Dr. Jim Eck and Athletic Director Mike Holloman, congratulated each student. Scholar-athletes represented the baseball; football; men’s and women’s basketball, cross country and soccer; softball, volleyball and cheerleading teams.

Gold medals were awarded to 16 varsity student-athletes earning a grade point average of 4.0 at least one of the two semesters. Fifty-nine students received silver medals for earning a GPA of 3.5 to 3.99. Bronze medals were given to 73 students earning between 3.0 and 3.49.

Louisburg College, America’s premier private two-year college, is related by faith to The United Methodist Church. It is committed to offering a supportive community which nurtures young men and women intellectually, culturally, socially, physically and spiritually.
