June 24, 2007
Dear Kingdom Co-Laborer,
I composed this communication while scanning rows of boxes primed for unpacking. Most of you will identify with arranging furniture and pictures and the endless search for “this and that,” which stray from sight during the move. Such was the scene of our arrival at the President’s home at Louisburg College.
By the grace of God, the Louisburg College Board of Trustees elected me to the office of College President in March 2007. With a deep sense of calling and gratitude, I accepted this opportunity for ministry and service.
After 20-plus years of service in Christian higher education, Sheila and I have served as a team at colleges and universities in Tennessee, Ohio, and Michigan. Our faith tradition is grounded in Wesleyan theology with a commitment to John Wesley’s encouragement of the integration of piety and learning.
Louisburg College is now 220 years old—the oldest two-year private college in the United States. Its rich history and tradition parallel the school’s motto from the biblical passage in Proverbs: “Wisdom is better than jewels.” The school’s academic and spiritual mission points towards its connection with The United Methodist Church and a purpose of preparing students for life and service.
I am writing this note as a request for your assistance with three opportunities:
1. Please consider Louisburg College when a prospective donor or supporter would like to invest in students and Christian higher education.
2. Please encourage students (and parents) from your church to consider Louisburg College for a Christian college experience in the United Methodist tradition.
3. Most importantly, please keep Louisburg College trustees, faculty, staff, and students in your prayers. Would you place the name of Louisburg College on your published prayer list?
With your involvement and prayer, I pledge to faithfully and tirelessly lead Louisburg College in support of your ministry, church, and the expansion of God’s Kingdom. Please contact me for any assistance, information, or opportunity to involve Louisburg College in the life of your church and youth at mclyburn@louisburg.edu or 919.497.3226.
May God richly bless you in the days ahead.
J. Michael Clyburn
