TRAVELING EXHIBITION SERIES 2010 – 2011

ROAD TO DAMASCUS
Paintings by Kathy Whaley Ammon

Tues. 8/24/2010 – Fri. 10/1/2010
Opening Reception / Slide Lecture by Kathy Ammon, 8/24/2009 @ 7 pm

kathy ammonKathy Whaley Ammon lives in Apex, NC with her husband of 25 years and their teenage daughter and son.  After college in South Carolina and Texas and then living in Florida, her family moved to Raleigh in 1994.  She was juried into Artspace in 1997, where she continues to have her studio.  She is known for her bold and expressive figurative paintings of humanity.  Her paintings are a response to both personal experiences and to world events.  The work speaks universally to humanity’s need for love and communion with others.  The paintings are not individual portraits but represent anyone and everyone.  Her imagery reveals a world where people are intimately and spiritually connected to one another.
During the past ten years, significant historical events such as the tragedy of 9/11 and the subsequent war in the Middle East have created an environment of vulnerability and fear.  During these times, Ms. Ammon has created this series of paintings which serve as a reevaluation of life, faith and purpose.
“These paintings speak of hope in a seemingly darkened world.  They are whispered stories of faith in the midst of life and love.”
                                                                                                - Kathy Ammon

FACES AND PLACES
Charcoals and Watercolors by Roy Paschal

Mon. 10/18/2010 – Tues. 11/23/2010
Opening Reception / Slide Lecture by Roy Paschal,  10/18/2009 @ 7 pm

roy paschalRoy Paschal has led a most interesting life as a visual artist.  He is a painter who understands the importance of spirit and personal vision in the creation of art.  One quote which guides him along his path is by the Italian Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci, “Where the spirit does not work with the hand there is no art.” Roy retired in June of 2008 after a thirty year career as a Forensic Artist for the state of South Carolina; carefully looking and listening.  His travels in the early summer of 2010 have taken him to the great museums of Italy, France and Spain.
The natural beauty of his home state of South Carolina continues to be the strongest influence in his work.  To this day you can find Roy knee deep in a salt water marsh or hiking along the Blue Ridge Mountains.  With his sketch book in hand he is always looking for that special spot to glimpse the magic of nature.
Louisburg College is fortunate to have Josh Parrot, Roy Paschal’s son-in-law, teaching Religion part-time in our Division of Humanities.
“From the common street performer to classically refined beauty, each face tells me a story.  For me this collection captures the human likeness, but more importantly reveals the human spirit.”
                                         - Roy Paschal

WHERE WE LIVE    Plein Air Paintings by Tim Postell
Wed. 1/19/2011 – Fri. 2/25/2011
Opening Reception and Gallery Talk/Slide Lecture by Tim Postell, 1/19/2011 @ 7 pm

tim postellSince 2002, Tim Postell has been a professional artist working out of his studio in Artspace in Raleigh.  Tim grew up in a rural area near Gastonia, NC.  His memories of being a kid playing sports and tending cattle where replaced by his joining the United States Air Force in 1985.  After his first tour of duty he returned home to work with Duke Power, the same utility his father had retired from.  He was then called back to active duty and served in the Persian Gulf Conflict.  When he returned home from the war, his life had changed.  Three years of soul searching, working and going to school at night, led Tim to pursuing an undergraduate degree in studio art at ECU, which then to graduate school at the Maryland Institute College of Art.

“These airy landscapes are the moments between breaths, the sound after a water drop rejoins  a puddle, the instant after a leaf breaks free and begins its journey.   I approach the landscapes with the intent to allow the viewer to exhale and to reminisce about a moment in their lives that brings them tranquility.  My intent is to learn to enjoy things without over analyzing.  There is much Beauty in the simplicities of life.”
                                                                            - Tim Postell

SOMEPLACE LIKE HOME    Paintings by Shade Elam Maret
Tues. 3/15/2011 –Sat.  4/23/2011
Opening Reception and Gallery Talk/Slide Lecture by Shade Elam Maret,  3/15/2011 @ 7 pm

elam maretShade Elam Maret started painting in watercolors early with private instruction from local artist Mabel Allen when growing up in Louisburg. She continued at St. Catherine’s School in Richmond. Since then, she has experimented with other mediums including oils and settled on acrylics. A journalism graduate of the University of Georgia, she has taken workshops from plein air painters Chris Morel and John Poon and studied painting at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center in Atlanta, Sertoma Arts Center in Raleigh and The Red Canvas in Apex.  When she’s not at her easel, she writes for magazines and newspapers as a freelance business writer from her home in Raleigh.
“I paint because I enjoy the process of creating.  I use shapes and color in bright, loose brush strokes to capture the beauty in what might be considered an ordinary house or scene.  Exploring the endless possibilities to capture playful spirit in my paintings is a lifelong commitment.  I am inspired by the works of Van Gogh, Matisse, Chagall, and Hopper.  My hope is that I will be a good steward of my creative ability and that my work might somehow uplift or restore others.”
                                                                        - Shade Elam Maret
