2007-2008 Hurricane Women's Basketball Coaches
Head Coach Mike Holloman is one of the most successful coaches in recent junior college women’s basketball history. During Holloman’s 20-year stint at Louisburg, the Lady Hurricanes have won more than 85 percent of their games, while boasting a graduation rate of more than 80 percent. Under Holloman, Louisburg College has reached the National Junior College National Tournament an impressive 14 times. Included among those appearances, was a national championship in 1991-92. It was the same year Holloman was selected as the NJCAA Coach of the Year.
“I’ve been very fortunate to have some outstanding players and the support of our administration during my time at Louisburg College,’’ Holloman said. “This school has one of the top athletic programs in the country, especially when you consider its size. I’m proud to be a part of the great tradition we have here.’’
Once a student assistant coach at Louisburg, under the legendary Paul ‘Buster’ Sanderford, Holloman returned to LC in 1988-89 as the head coach, going 26-4 and reaching the national tournament. With Holloman leading the way, the Lady Hurricanes have posted only one double-digit season in losses (18-12 in 1993-94). Louisburg has won 29 or more contests in a campaign five times since Holloman took over, including a 36-1 mark during LC’s national title march in 1991-92.
Louisburg College has claimed 17 Region X crowns under Holloman, whose career record at LC is a sparkling 486-88. Holloman achieved his historic 400th victory early in the 2003-04 campaign. Two of Holloman’s former players (Jameka Jones and Jackie Higgins) have been drafted by the Women’s National Basketball Association. Countless others have starred at Division I schools, and nine performers from LC’s 2001-2002 squad received scholarships to play at four-year colleges (four at the Division 1 level). In 2001, Holloman was selected to be the school’s athletic director.
Raised in Wilson, N.C., Holloman graduated from Saratoga Central High School before attending Louisburg College from 1981-83. Holloman earned an associate’s degree from LC in addition to acquiring a wealth of knowledge about basketball from Sanderford. Holloman returned to Wilson to obtain his bachelor’s degree from Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) before receiving a master’s degree from East Carolina University in 1986. Holloman is married to the former Dana Byerly, who serves as the Lady Hurricanes’ official team statistician. Dana has a bachelor’s degree from Barton College and a paralegal certificate from Meredith College. The couple resides in Louisburg with their daughter, Ragan. The Hollomans are avid fans of the Baltimore Orioles baseball team.
