2007-2008 Hurricane Women's Soccer

Headline News:

Program History:

Now in its tenth year, the Louisburg College women's soccer program has grown steadily.  Under Head Coach Adam Reekie, the program aims to continue developing athletic excellence, ensuring player visibility by four-year schools, and maintaining the proud Hurricane tradition.

Louisburg College expects to continue attracting top student athletes to its women's soccer program as the program evolves into a fierce perennial contender. In the past few years, the women's soccer team has qualified for and excelled in the 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003 Region X Finals.

A rigorous schedule faces the Lady Hurricanes this season as they play competitive two-year and four-year institutions.  Home games are played at May Field. May Field, with it's hybrid Bermuda playing surface located at extreme west end of the campus, is considered to be among the best junior college fields in the Southeast.

The strength of the program is reflected in the fact that the players have consistently been recognized for their efforts on the field as well as in the classroom.  Each year our players receive All-Region and All-South honors, and the vast majority go on to play for four-year colleges and universities after graduating from Louisburg College.

Soccer Takes Top Honors:
Louisburg College soccer player’s Chrystel Bakong and Sarah Monaghan were presented with the Male and Female Outstanding Student-Athlete Award s for 2008. This award is given each year to student-athletes who have exhibited academic and athletic excellence. Both Chrystel and Sarah have achieved over a 3.5 GPA and were selected as members of the NJCAA Region X All Region team. Director of Soccer Coaching Dave Sexton was pleased for the two players saying, “Chrystel has been fantastic this year for us and will be off to NC State to play next year. He was a pleasure to coach and will be very hard to replace. Sarah is going to Guilford to play next year. She was one of the most consistent players we have had. Sarah will also be sorely missed.”

Alumni News:

April 26, 2008: The First Annual Louisburg College Women’s Soccer Alumni Game took place over the weekend and it was a great success. Although numbers were moderate for the former Lady Canes, the enthusiasm was very high. Becky Craig (2001-2003) said “it was great to see some old faces and to be back at the Burg. Next year I will have to do a bit more training though!” Coach Reekie hopes this will be the start of a rich tradition for the future. “Next year we hope to increase the size of this event and attract more alumni . It’s important for current players to meet former Lady Canes and to hear where they went and what they did after Louisburg College,” said Coach Reekie.

LC Athletes Volunteer:
On November 10, the Louisburg College men’s and women’s soccer teams, as well as students from LC’s freshmen Crossroads program, held a soccer day-camp for local youth. The Soccer Fun Camp was held in Joyner Park and was organized through Louisburg Parks and Recreation. The college students were in charge of planning the camp, which featured an hour of basic skill clinics and an hour of games. The camp was free and 45 youth participated in the event.

Ormsby Signs With Lee's McRae!

Sophomore defender Shaina Ormsby (Middle Creek HS, Raleigh) has committed to play soccer at Lee’s McRae, a Division II school in Banner Elk North Carolina. Ormsby, a two year starter at Louisburg College, earned All-Region honors and was named the team’s MVP in 2007. Ormsby was a key contributor to the Lady Canes success, which included an appearance at the Region X tournament finals.

“I can honestly say that playing here prepare d me for the next step of my soccer career. I am looking forward to playing at the next level and I know Louisburg has given me everything I need to succeed, ”Ormsby said.

Coach Reekie is pleased with Shaina's decision and said, “Shaina has been a very strong player for us this year. I have no doubt that she will be an asset at Lee’s McRae. It’s important to me as a coach that my players are prepared athletically and academically when they leave Louisburg. I wish Shaina the best and look forward to watching her progress at Lee’s McRae .”

Monaghan Signs With Guilford!

Sophomore defender Sarah Monaghan (Dixon  HS, Jacksonville) has committed to play soccer at Guilford College, a Division III school in Greensboro, North Carolina. Monaghan, a two year starter at Louisburg College, earned 1st All-Region honors in 2007. Monaghan, like Ormbsy, was a key contributor to the Lady Canes success, which included an appearance at the Region X tournament finals.

“Playing here at Louisburg has been great. Hopefully, I can take all that I have learned on the field and in the classroom and apply it at Guilford”, Monaghan said.

Coach Reekie is confident in Monaghan’s ability. “Sarah is a great person who always gives you 100%. Guilford College is a great school both academically and athletically. Sarah will do well there, I have no doubt about that”, said Coach Reekie. Monaghan will team up with former Lady Cane, stand-out Lauren Baber.
