Samantha Laino Named 2009 Student-Athlete of the Year!

For the second consecutive year, a member of the women's soccer team has received the prestigious Student-Athlete of the Year award. This year, the outstanding recipient was team captain, Samantha Laino. Laino has been a integral part of the women’s program for the last two years on and off the field. Samantha started every single game for Lady Canes over her two years at Louisburg. Off the field, she set a great example by boasting a 3.0 GPA in the classroom.
Laino’s Honors Include:
All Region 1 st Team 07-08
Team MVP 07-08
All Region 1 st Team 08-09
Team Captain 08-09
Laino looks forward to attending Lock Haven University in the fall, where she will pursue a degree in athletic training and continue her soccer career.
Coach Reekie said “ Samantha has been a great servant to the college and women’s program over the past two years. She is the type of player every coach wants in their team. I am so pleased that she has received this award and thoroughly deserves it. Sam is off to Lock Haven next year and I have no doubt she will continue to excel in the classroom and on the pitch. I will be sad to see her go, but know she is ready for this next challenge.”
Lady Canes Win NC Wesleyan Tournament:
The LC Women's Soccer Team won the 8 v. 8 Tournament hosted by NC Wesleyan over the weekend of April 4th.
"It was good to win the tournament, but also to show the local four-year colleges that two-year programs can compete with them," said Coach Adam Reekie. "We also played some good soccer. Hopefully, we will see some of the Lady Canes at those four-year colleges in the future. All the hard work they have put in this spring has paid off," he continued. "Well done, girls! We would also like to thank LC English Professor Twana Biram and her husband, Cliff, for their continued attendance and support."

Program History:
Now in its tenth year, the Louisburg College women's soccer program has grown steadily. Under Head Coach Adam Reekie, the program aims to continue developing athletic excellence, ensuring player visibility by four-year schools, and maintaining the proud Hurricane tradition.
Louisburg College expects to continue attracting top student athletes to its women's soccer program as the program evolves into a fierce perennial contender. In the past few years, the women's soccer team has qualified for and excelled in the 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003 Region X Finals.
A rigorous schedule faces the Lady Hurricanes this season as they play competitive two-year and four-year institutions. Home games are played at May Field. May Field, with it's hybrid Bermuda playing surface located at extreme west end of the campus, is considered to be among the best junior college fields in the Southeast.
The strength of the program is reflected in the fact that the players have consistently been recognized for their efforts on the field as well as in the classroom. Each year our players receive
All-Region and All-South honors, and the vast majority go on to play for four-year colleges and universities after graduating from Louisburg College.
