Hurricane Classic Tournament Results - Oct. 3, 2009
On Saturday October 3rd , the Louisburg College softball team hosted its first Hurricane Classic softball tournament. Teams that participated included Pitt Community College, Elon University, Chowan University, North Carolina Wesleyan College, Meredith College and LC. The Lady Canes hosted eight games on two fields, and played two games of their own. The Lady Canes tied North Carolina Wesleyan in game one with a score of 5-5 due to time limit. Brittany Shotwell pitched the complete game with five strikeouts. Key offensive players included: Shotwell (Homerun), Amanda Woolard (2-3 with a Homerun), Amber Weaver (1-3 with a double), Chelsea Davis (2-3 with a double, single and RBI), and Laura Curran (1-2 with 2 RBI).
The Lady Canes lost a tough second game to Meredith College in the last contest of the day. The Canes rallied for a comeback in the bottom of the 7th inning, and may have gone on to win the game had it not been for a controversial game ending call at home plate. The final score was 5-4. Taylor Shelton pitched six innings, and Lindsey Holtz came in for relief to pitch the 7th inning. Key offensive players included: Chelsea Davis, Lindsey Holtz, Caitlin Latta, Megan Murray, Amber Weaver, Irene Monteith, Laura Curran, and Brittany Shotwell who all worked together to score all four of LC’s runs in the bottom of the 7th.
The Lady Canes would like to thank all those who attended and worked to help make the first annual Hurricane Classic a success! The Lady Canes wrap up the scheduled fall season this Friday, October 9th with a double header at Elon University. Game times at 5pm and 7pm.

During extra innings, Shortstop Marjorie Pettitt and 3rd Baseman Caitee Latta turned a bases loaded double play to get the Canes out of defensive trouble. In the bottom of the 8th inning, Lindsey Holtz made a sacrifice bunt to move runner Caitee Latta to 3rd base, and Amanda Woolard drove in the game winning run (Latta) with a hard hit single to the fence.
