Hurricane Golfers End Fall Season with Third Place Finish: November 12, 2011

On Saturday, November 12, the Chowan University Golf Invitational was played at Valley Pine Country Club in Lasker, NC.  Host, Chowan University, won the golf tournament with Virginia State University finishing in second place.   Competing against schools from the MEAC and CIAA Conferences,  Louisburg College managed a third place finish.  Hurricane golfer, Julio Gonzalez (from Mexico) finished tied for second place with a 1-under-par round of 71.  Teammate and captain, Seth Nagle (from Maryland) finished tied for eighth place with a 76 score.  Also competing were golfers from Virginia Union University and Saint Augustine’s College. 

For the fall 2011 season, all together the Hurricane A and B squads have achieved 31 wins and 2 ties against 25 losses in competition with NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA schools.  More outstanding is the record of 20-4-2 by the A squad in competition with other NJCAA opponents—with no losses against other NJCAA Division 3 peer schools.  The Hurricane golfers will begin the Spring 2012 season in early February.

 

Hurricane Golfers Win Region X Fall Championship in Dramatic Fashion: November 6, 2011

Braving the wind, frost, and cold temperatures of the North Carolina mountains near Elkin, the Hurricane golfers won the 36-hole Fourth Annual Region X Fall Championship.  Surry Community College hosted the golf tournament on November 5-6 at Cedarbrook Country Club in Elkin, NC.  

The 2010 winner, Wake Technical Community College (Division 1), held the first round lead by seven strokes over Louisburg (Division 3) and the rest of the field that included Surry (Division 2), Johnston (Division 2), Sandhills (Division 3), and Craven (Division 3) community colleges.   Playing on Sunday in the next to last group, Sean Michael Brown (from Ohio) pulled the Hurricanes from second to first place with a one-over-par 73 in the last round giving Louisburg the victory by 9 strokes over Wake Tech.   Sean Brown finished as the medalist with a 5 stroke victory.  Louisburg golfers—Seth Nagle (from Maryland) finished tied for fourth place, Juan Fernandez (from Panama) finished in eighth place, Julio Gonzalez (from Mexico) finished in ninth place, and Dillon Powell (from Georgia) finished in thirteenth place.

Louisburg College also won the First Annual Region X Fall Championship in 2008 when it was last hosted at Cedarbrook Country Club.  According to coach Charles Sloan, “Occasionally, the Hurricane golfers have struggled on an individual basis, but have gelled into a cohesive team unit as the fall season progressed.”   The Hurricane golfers will conclude their winning fall season at Valley Pine Country Club on Saturday, November 12, where they will be in competition with several senior colleges—including host Chowan University. 
 

 

'Canes Victorious At Craven Community College Invitational: October 24, 2011

The Hurricane golf team travelled to New Bern, North Carolina on October 24 to compete at Emerald Golf Course in a Region X 18-hole tournament hosted by Craven Community College. Louisburg emerged victorious with a 2 stroke margin over Sandhills and Wake Technical Community College. Freshman Juan Fernandez from Panama tied for second place with sophomore Julio Gonzalez from Mexico earning fifth place. Freshman Dillon Powell from Georgia, sophomore Seth Nagle from Maryland, and freshman Tim DeBarge from Concord, NC turned in solid performances to help the Hurricanes to victory.

In April, Emerald Golf Course will be the site of the Region X Spring Championship which will decide which Division 2 and Division 3 golf teams advance to their respective NJCAA National Championship. In the meantime, Surry Community College will host the Region 10 36-hole Fall Championship on November 4-6 at Cedarbrook Country Club in Elkin, North Carolina.

 

Hurricanes Golf Team Wins Sandhills Fall Invitational In Pinehurst: October 5, 2011

In an important Region 10 match on October 4th, the Louisburg Men’s Golf team competed against Sandhills, Johnston, Craven, and Surry Community College on the Holly Course at Pinewild Golf Club.   The Hurricanes won by 16 strokes over runner-up Johnston Community College.   Juan Fernandez tied for second, Julio Gonzalez and Tim DeBarge tied for fourth and team captain Seth Nagle tied for sixth place. 

In the next event scheduled for October 14th, the ‘Canes will host the 18-hole Whirlwind Adventure Tournament at Bull Creek Golf Club in Louisburg, and then on October 15th they will host their annual 36-hole Iron Team Clash Modified Stableford Tournament at The River Golf Club near Bunn.   These events will feature competitors from Craven, Johnston, Surry, St. Augustines, Guilford, and Wingate University.   All spectators will be admitted free of charge and are welcome to observe the ‘Canes in action.

 

Hurricanes Win Bullfight Summons Tournament: October 3, 2011

With a 6-over par team score of 294, the golf team won the Louisburg Bullfight Summons Tournament held at Bull Creek Golf & Country Club in Louisburg on Sunday, October 2.   Sophomores Julio Gonzalez (Mexico) and Juan Fernandez (Panama) scored 1-under par rounds of 71.  Team captain Seth Nagle (Maryland) scored a 73 with freshman Tim DeBarge (Concord, North Carolina) scoring a 79.  Chowan University was second with a 307 followed by Wake Technical Community College with a 309.  Johnston Community College earned fourth place, with North Carolina Wesleyan College achieving fifth place.  

On Tuesday, October 4, the team will travel to Pinehurst, NC to compete against Johnston, Surry, Craven, Wake Technical, and Sandhills community colleges.

 

Hurricane Eddie Huckabee Places 10th At NJCAA Division III National Championship

Sophomore Eddie Huckabee of Durham, NC represented Louisburg College in the NJCAA Div III Mens Golf National Championship. The tournament was hosted at the Chautauqua Golf Club in Chautauqua, NY June 6th - 10th. In late April, Eddie qualified for the National Championship by earning medalist honors in the Region X Championship held at Eagle Ridge Country Club in Raleigh, NC when he shot two-over-par for 36 holes. In the National Championship, Eddie scored 302 or fourteen-over-par--losing by only 5 strokes. For his efforts, Eddie earned 10th place in the Nationals and received second team All-American honors. Congratulations to Eddie Huckabee!

 

The Hurricanes Finsh Runners-Up At NJCAA Region X Tournament: April 28, 2011

The 2011 Louisburg College mens golf team concluded its season on Tuesday, April 26th in the Region X Division III Golf Championship.   In spite of inclement weather, the team posted scores of 307 and 302 in the 36-hole golf tournament held at Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Raleigh, NC.   The team won the final round by four strokes but ended up losing to Sandhills Community College by just three strokes.   As the 2010 third place national championship team, Sandhills Community College again earned the privilege of competing in the 2011 National Championship in Chautauqua, NY.

Sophomore Eddie Huckabee from Durham, NC set the pace for the Hurricanes with a 144 or two-over-par performance in the golf tournament by shooting 73 and 71 on the par 71 course.   In addition, sophomore Nick Jackson from Calhoun, GA and freshmen Julio Gonzalez Galvan from Mexico tied for fifth place in the tournament.  As the tournament medalist, Eddie Huckabee earned the honor of competing at the 72-hole National Championship to be held on June 6-10 at Chautauqua Golf Club in Chautauqua, NY—competing against more than 125 other division III championship golfers.  

Two freshmen, Julio Gonzalez Galvan and Juan Diego Fernandez from Panama, will play in the PGA Minority Intercollegiate Individual Golf Championship to be held in Port St. Lucie, FL from May 6-8.  The 54-hole tournament will include approximately 200 golfers from the continental United States.  Best wishes to Julio and Juan in the tournament!



The Hurricanes Are On Course For A Strong Season: March 21, 2011

The Louisburg College Mens Golf team has been involved in 5 golf tournaments so far this spring. In its first outing at Bull Creek Golf & Country Club in Louisburg, the varsity team triumphed over the Apprentice School from Newport News, VA with a 298 score for Louisburg as opposed to a 322 for the Apprentice School.

The Hurricanes competed in the Wake Tech Spring Invitational during the spring holidays and ended up in second place in the 36-hole event—losing to the host college, Wake Technical Community College. But, the Louisburg College varsity golf team defeated Craven Community College, Johnston Community College, and Sandhills Community College.

The Hurricanes varsity golf team defeated all five colleges on Friday, March 18, in the Hurricane UFO Dispute with a 307 team score—defeating its rival divisional opponent Sandhills Community College by two strokes. Other competing teams were Johnston Community College, Surry Community College, Monroe Community College, and Onondaga Community College. Congratulations to Juan Diego Fernandez on a two-under par score 70 in the Dispute.

After leading the first round of the Hurricane Fusillade Challenge Modified Stableford event with a 294 at Bull Creek Golf & Country Club, the Louisburg varsity team lost to Wake Technical Community College in the second round. However, Louisburg College won the second place trophy over such teams as Surry Community College, Monroe Community College, Onondaga Community College, Johnston Community College, and Georgia Military College. Congratulations to sophomore golfer Eddie Huckabee who finished with -2 points to take fifth place in the Stableford tournament scoring.

The junior varsity team has also competed in two tournaments. At the Vance-Granville Community College Spring Invitational in early March, the junior varsity team finished in third place. In addition, the junior varsity finished in fourth place on Friday, in the Hurricane UFO Dispute at Bull Creek Golf & Country Club.
