Strong Season Comes To A End For The Hurricanes: October 30, 2011
The Hurricanes soccer team wrapped up their season after a great run in the Region and outstanding close to the regular season. The ‘Canes finished with an unprecedented run of nine shutouts going into the Region X Tournament as the number two seed. The team faced off against a tough Cape Fear Community College squad in the Quarter-Final game Wednesday, October 26th. The match was hard fought with Louisburg going down 1-0 early and it was not until ten minutes into the second half when Arnaldo Cabrrera converted on a pass from Arturo Alvan for the first goal. Then with nearly another 20 minutes of scoreless soccer, it took the nations second leading scoring Jageep "Sunny" Makh to score the go ahead goal for Louisburg off a free kick from 30 yards out. Sunny's goal would be his 6th game winning goal of the season and would advance the Louisburg men's soccer team to the Semi-Finals against Wake Tech Community College on Saturday Oct. 29th at CASL Soccer Complex. The game started at 8:00 p.m. on a warm 32 degrees night. The game was hard fought by both sides with the majority of the possessions and goal scoring chances coming from the Louisburg team. It took 90 minutes, two 10 minutes overtimes and 5 penalty kicks to decided this match and at 11:30 p.m. Louisburg was determined the winner after Nathan Mangione made a big save during penalty kicks and Louisburg scoring each of their kicks. The Semi-Final win left a match up against the top two teams in the Region, Spartanburg Methodist and Louisburg College. On Sunday, the Hurricanes started the match in dream fashion going up 2-0 with 20 minutes to play in the first half. Goals included a world class kick by Sunny Makh from 20 yards out and another goal by Makh after a penalty kick was awarded. However, the Pioneers with help by their Region X Payer of the Year converted on early goals in the second half, giving them unstoppable momentum. The match ended in favor of Spartanburg 4-2.
The men's soccer team and first year head coach Stuart Brown would like to say thanks for all the support they received during the season and at the tournament. Coach Brown said, "We are blessed to have such a great group of players and we look forward to preparing for the 2012 season."
