Hurricanes Win Region X Tournament: March 7th, 2009

The Louisburg College Men’s Basketball Team won the NJCAA Region X Championship Sunday after three days of fierce competition.  The Hurricanes entered the tournament as the #2 seed, falling just beneath Guilford Tech Community College.  In the quarter-finals Friday they took on Pitt Community College defeating them 86-76 to advance to the semi-finals.  Saturday the competition was tougher against Wake Tech Community College, but the Canes’ fought till the end and pulled a 72-67 win over the Knights.  With the Region X Title at stake, the LC ball club knew they would have to merely play harder than Guilford Tech Community College on Sunday in order to win.  In the championship game the Titans came out strong and quickly posted an 8 point lead.  The Canes’ continued to fight back and were able to press ahead by 2 going into half-time.  The second-half started out much like the first, but the Canes’ did not get discouraged.  They continued to work as a team and were able to post points and pull ahead.  In the end, the Hurricanes’ were victorious winning 86-76 to become the NJCAA Region X Champs!  They will now advance to the NJCAA National Tournament in Danville, Illinois March 16th - 20th.  Congratulations to the Hurricanes and  Good luck at Nationals!

Program Information:

At Louisburg College, the men's basketball program is steeped in tradition. During the past forty years, the men's basketball team has won three Region X Championships and has competed in the District Championship four times in the last nine years. With an overall record of 688-533, former Coach J. Enid Drake is among the top 10 “winningest” coaches in the NJCAA and was inducted into the JUCO Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2001. The Region X Coach of the Year award was renamed in Coach Drake’s honor during the 2005 season. Hurricane players have consistently received top regional and national honors, and numerous student-athletes have gone on to play for four-year colleges and universities including the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University, the University of Hawaii, and Lenoir-Rhyne College. Various players have had the opportunity to continue to play basketball at the professional level. The team competes in Holton Gymnasium on the campus of Louisburg College. Men's basketball remains a popular sport on our campus; bringing plenty of excitement to Louisburg College for our students and the community.
