Hurricanes Battle On The Road: January 25, 2012

The Hurricanes traveled to Greenville on Thursday to compete against the Bulldogs of Pitt Community College. The #11 NJCAA ranked 'Canes arrived confident, but left surprised. The Hurricanes struggled to penetrate Pitt's zone defense that forced them to shoot from the perimeter. Unable to work the ball inside the paint caused the major upset, 68-70.

On Saturday, the 'Canes competed on the road against Guilford Tech Community College. The Hurricanes quickly found their tempo and were able to take control throughout the game, winning 76-69. Leading the way for the 'Canes were Rashod Chavis with 15 points and Joe Goodwin with 14 points.

The Hurricanes will be on the road again this Saturday at Rockingham Community College. Game time is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.

 

'Canes Finish Tough Week 2-1: January 18, 2012

The #6 ranked Hurricanes had a tough week of competition. On Tuesday, the ‘Canes traveled to Martinsville, Virginia to compete against Patrick Henry Community College. The Patriots refused to give up any baskets, causing the ‘Canes to struggle to keep up. Unable to turn the momentum, the Hurricanes came up short, losing 75-92.

On Thursday, the Hurricanes traveled to Sandhills Community College looking for a win. The fired up ‘Canes came out determined and pushed a win over the Flyers, 85-73.

The Hurricanes traveled to Wake Tech Community College to participate in the MLK Jamboree on Monday, where they faced rivals Cape Fear Community College in a much anticipated re-match. Earlier in the season, the Sea Devils squeaked out a one point win over the Hurricanes. For forty minutes the two teams struggled back and forth to take the lead. With the score tied at the end of regulation, the teams were forced to continue to battle in overtime. The ‘Canes came out strong and took the lead quickly to seal the win 75-69.

The Hurricanes will travel this week to compete against Pitt Community College and Guilford Technical Community College.



Hurricanes Add Two Wins: December 5, 2011

The Hurricanes moved up in the NJCAA National Top 20 Poll this week from #13 to #12, thanks to two wins last week. On Wednesday, the 'Canes hosted Wytheville Community College, defeating the Wildcats with little pressure 105-61. The competition increased on Saturday when the LC ball team battled Catawba Valley Community College. With the support of the fired up Caniacs, the 'Canes defeated the Buccaneers, 99-89. This weekend they will travel to USC-Sumter. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Hurricanes JV basketball team traveled to Methodist University on Sunday and came out on top, 71-52.



'Canes Defeated By Sea Devils 89-88: November 23, 2011


The men's basketball team hosted region rivals Cape Fear Community College last Tuesday. The Hurricanes came out strong and had a commanding 22-point lead in the second half before they quickly ran out of steam. The Sea Devils took advantage of missed free throws by the 'Canes to gain the lead and managed to squeak out the win, 89-88. The Hurricanes will host Catawba Valley Community College this Saturday. Game time is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.


Hurricanes Host Roger Taylor Classic: November 14, 2011


The Hurricanes hosted the Annual Roger Taylor Classic over the weekend. The two day event included tough competition from Mount Zion Christian Academy, Hargrave Military and Lenoir Community College.  The 'Canes played the in first game Friday night against the Warriors of Mount Zion.  In front of an excited crowd, the 'Canes won their fourth game of the season, 97-84.  Leading the way for the Hurricanes were Lashawn Alexander with 21 points, Antonio Robinson with 19 points and Tyquan Roberts contributing 18 points.

In a much anticipated match-up, the Hurricanes competed against Hargrave Military  Academy Saturday night.  With both teams fired up and ready to battle, the game had multiple lead changes.  The 'Canes were up by 6 points with less than seven minutes left in the second half, but found themselves unable to hold the Tigers.  In the end, the Hurricanes came up short, 80-87.  Tyquan Roberts had 23 points and 10 rebounds.


Coca-Cola Classic A Success For The 'Canes: November 8, 2011

The Hurricanes earned two more wins during the annual Coca-Cola Classic held on campus last weekend.  On Saturday the 'Canes battled Southside Virginia Community College, winning 92-78.   Tyquan Roberts lead the way for the ‘Canes with 12 rebounds and Terance Christian added an additional 7.  The Hurricanes returned to the court on Sunday where they dominated Germanna Community College and pulled a 121-43 win over the Grizzlies.  

The Hurricanes will host the annual Roger Taylor Classic this weekend.  The two day event will begin on Friday and include Lenoir Community College, Hargrave Military Academy and Mount Zion Christian Academy.  The Hurricanes will kick things off on Friday at 6:00 p.m. against Mount Zion.  The 'Canes will play the last game Saturday at 8:00 p.m. against Hargrave Military Academy.


Hurricanes Win Season Opener: November 1, 2011

The Hurricanes returned to the court Tuesday night to open up the much anticipated 2011 season. In front of a packed crowd, the 'Canes battled the Fire Ants of USC-Sumter. With the score tied 90-90, LC Freshman Kevin Williams scored a jump-shot for two points. The 'Canes added a couple free-throws to push the win to 94-90. The Hurricanes will host the Coca-Cola Classic this Saturday and Sunday. Participating teams include Southside Community College, Sandhills Community College and Germanna Community College. The 'Canes will compete Saturday at 6:00 p.m. against Southside Community College and on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. against Germanna Community College.


Program Information:


At Louisburg College, the men's basketball program is steeped in tradition. During the past forty years, the men's basketball team has won three Region X Championships and has competed in the District Championship four times in the last nine years. With an overall record of 688-533, former Coach J. Enid Drake is among the top 10 “winningest” coaches in the NJCAA and was inducted into the JUCO Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2001. The Region X Coach of the Year award was renamed in Coach Drake’s honor during the 2005 season. Hurricane players have consistently received top regional and national honors, and numerous student-athletes have gone on to play for four-year colleges and universities including the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University, the University of Hawaii, and Lenoir-Rhyne College. Various players have had the opportunity to continue to play basketball at the professional level. The team competes in Holton Gymnasium on the campus of Louisburg College. Men's basketball remains a popular sport on our campus; bringing plenty of excitement to Louisburg College for our students and the community.
