HURRICANE WARNING! With an exciting brand of football, a character-first approach and great quality opponents, Canes fans have reason to be excited about the 2011 campaign. It’s that time of year again as training camp opens up this week. This year, Hurricanes Head Coach, John Sala leads his troops into their first full season as members of the Northeast Football Conference (NEFC). Canes fans have reason to be excited as conference membership means bowl berth and all-conference opportunities for members of the 2011 squad.
The 2011 roster is headed offensively by running back Rasheed Williams, while Stephen Johnson looks to anchor a young talented group on the offensive line. The Canes boast three returning starters at the quarterback position that will battle with incoming freshman talent for the signal calling duties. This year’s offensive captains as voted by the team and coaching staff are; Justin Patterson, Cedric Chisolm and Maurice McGahee. Offensively, the coaching staff looks to build on last year’s success and have another solid season.
The three 2011 defensive captains are all returning starters that figure to play huge roles on this year’s team. Titus Best and Sam Kidd will head up the Cane defense from their linebacker positions and the coaching staff expects defensive back/return specialist Kewitt Koonce to have another big year. Recruiting efforts focused on the defensive front and the coaching staff brought in a large crop of talent to compete for positions in the trenches. Look for the Canes to continue their expectation of defensive excellence with another group of very talented athletes competing for playing time.
In the kicking game, this year’s roster will see many new faces as Mike Jones, Peyton Lucy and Chris Gothie will all compete for playing time.
Team strength was a huge point of emphasis throughout winter conditioning sessions. Hurricane head strength and condition Coach Aaron Baker pushed the Canes daily to give a, “Championship Effort”, to prepare for the 2011 season.
The Canes coaching staff have once again filled their roster with individuals who are both great athletes and, keeping with their CHARACTER FIRST approach, tremendous people.
Check out this year’s schedule and come out and support your CANES!
