Academic Life

Learning Partners Program

Applicants for Louisburg Learning Partners (LLP) are required to complete a dual admission process. Materials must be submitted to both Admissions and Louisburg Learning Partners representatives, who independently review each applicant's information.

Louisburg Learning Partners applicants must:

1. Gain acceptance to Louisburg College.

2. Submit a diagnostic evaluation and additional materials that describe a specific learning disability.

LD DOCUMENTATION GUIDELINES

In order to receive accommodations at Louisburg College, the student must identify him/herself as having a learning disability by providing the following information:

  • A complete psycho-educational report conducted by a professional who is certified/licensed to diagnose learning disabilities. The evaluator's name, title, and professional credentials and affiliation must be provided. The evaluation must include:
    • Assessment of intellectual ability. Louisburg College accepts the following tests:
      • The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scales (WAIS-R or WAIS-III), with all subtest standard scores provided (Object Assembly and Picture Arrangement optional). Standard Scores for Verbal Comprehension, Perceptual Organization, Working Memory, and Processing Speed Indices must be provided, as well. (Note: The WISC-R or WISC-III will not be accepted.)
      • Differential Ability Scales (DAS)
      • Kaufman Adult Intelligence Test (KAIT)
      • Stanford-Binet
    • Assessment of educational achievement in the areas of reading, mathematics, and written language. Suitable tests include, but are not limited to:
      • Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Educational Achievement-Revised (WJ-R) or Third Edition (WJ-III)
      • Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT)
    • A statement indicating diagnosis of a specific learning disability. Diagnoses based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual - Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) is preferred. A simple discrepancy between ability and achievement does not, in and of itself, constitute a learning disability; information on processing ability must be included.
      • A narrative indicating the current status and impact of the learning disability in an academic setting. The evaluation can be no more than 3 years old.
    • Latest IEP or 504 Plan*
      • Include all annual goals and classroom and testing modifications. (*For recent high school graduates.)
    • High school transcript (does not have to be official copy)

    • Assessment of intellectual ability. Louisburg College accepts the following:
      • The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scales (WAIS-R or WAIS-III), with all subtest standard scores provided (Object Assembly and Picture Arrangement optional). Standard Scores for Verbal Comprehension, Perceptual Organization, Working Memory, and Processing Speed Indices must be provided, as well. (Note: The WISC-R or WISC-III will not be accepted.)

LEARNING PARTNERS APPLICATION PROCESS

To be considered for admission to the Louisburg College Learning Partners Program for services in learning disabilities or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, applicants must provide the following information:

  • A complete psycho-educational report conducted by a professional who is certified/licensed to diagnose learning disabilities and/or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. The evaluator's name, title, and professional credentials and affiliation must be provided. The evaluation must include:
    • Assessment of intellectual ability. Louisburg College accepts the following tests:
      • The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scales (WAIS-R or WAIS-III), with all subtest standard scores provided (Object Assembly and Picture Arrangement optional). Standard Scores for Verbal Comprehension, Perceptual Organization, Working Memory, and Processing Speed Indices must be provided, as well.

    • Personal Statement
      • A personal statement written by the student which addresses how s/he learns, strategies that have aided academic achievement, educational and career goals, motivation to succeed, and commitment to undertake Learning Partners. This statement can be typewritten or submitted in legible handwriting and should be at least one page in length.
    • Interview
      • After careful review of each applicant's completed file of materials, an on-campus interview will be scheduled. This interview will provide the opportunity for applicants to meet personally with Learning Partners representatives to discuss goals, learning differences, and expectations. Information from this meeting will be used to ascertain the applicant's needs and suitability for Learning Partners services.

3. Submit two (2) letters of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, tutor, clergy, employer, or coach. At least one letter must be from a teacher. Recommendations from family members will not be accepted.

  • Appropriate letters of recommendation address the student's academic strengths and areas of concern, motivation to succeed in Learning Partners and undertake this responsibility, commitment to learning and intellectual curiosity, ability to organize, analyze, and apply knowledge, ability to communicate through oral and written expression, personal qualities and characteristics that support the application, and probable success of the student in a college environment.
  • Letters of recommendation may be requested from:
    • Teachers*
    • Counselors
    • Tutors
    • Clergy
    • Employers
    • Coaches

*Note: At least one letter of recommendation should be from a teacher.
