Along with having an individual tutor, the Louisburg Learning
Partners and The Academy student has access to state-of-the-art
Computer and Technology Labs equipped with learning-specific
hardware and software that can assist every student.
Reading Program (Software)
Kurzweil 3000 - A reading program and scanner that
assists the student with reading by projecting the text onto the
computer screen. The student then is able to manipulate the text
size and the speed at which it is read to the student, to
utilize a thesaurus and dictionary while reading, and basically
to create a reading that is most appropriate for the student's
reading needs.
Writing Programs (Software)
TextHelp - A writing program that assists people who have
reading and writing difficulties. It can read text aloud and
help the writer construct words and sentences. It also has
advanced spell checking, document scanning, screen reading, and
pronunciation facilities.
Dragon Naturally Speaking - A writing program that allows
the user to speak the text to the computer, rather than relying
on the student to manipulate the keyboard to achieve similar
results. The writer may then orally or manually edit the
text.
Inspiration - A writing program that gives the student
visual representations of ideas or concepts in the form of a
diagram. It also provides an integrated outlining environment
for the student to develop ideas into organized written
documents.
Math Programs (Software)
Intelligent Tutor - A concept and skills series in math
that gives explanations of fundamental steps to solve problems,
from the levels of pre-Algebra to Trigonometry. It also allows
the student to rehearse the steps by giving practice
problems.
Math Xpert - A pre-Calculus program that gives the
student an example problem. The student then chooses which steps
to use to solve the problem. Step-by-step, the program explains
and shows how the problem is solved.
Laptop Keyboard
Alpha Smart - Every Learning Partners and Academy student
has access to a laptop word processor he or she may check out
for note taking purposes. When the class is completed, the
student saves the notes to a disc and/or easily hooks up the
laptop to a printer.
Internet Access - Along with having access to the
Internet in their rooms, Learning Partners and Academy students
may access the internet at six locations on campus: the library,
the school's computer lab, the three Learning Partners labs, and
the Academy lab. In each facility there is always a faculty
member available for assistance.
